Press release
Factum Arte is an art conservation company based in Madrid, Milan, and London, consisting of a team of artists, technicians and conservators dedicated to digital mediation. They focus on the production of works for contemporary artists and the application of new technologies to the creation of objectively accurate facsimiles. On a visit to Madrid, Cook walked through the factory and saw a lot of contemporary art that looked cold to her, where she could not see the touch of human hand, didn't see brush stroke, or a fingerprint. Where she did see the human touch was in the insignificant tools that the artisans have to use to finish the pieces: a brush that was used to clean out resin and plaster from a wooden box that's used and reused to make a mold; a discarded rubber glove; a bucket that had been used to mix plaster, which now looks like an abstract painting, and inside it, glass microspheres that are used to sandblast. They had a life of their own, these tools.
